What to Do When Your Sermon Fails (Basic Homiletics) - Katia Adams

Katia Adams • October 15, 2020

Any preacher will tell you they’ve certainly delivered at least one sermon that completely bombed. So as you grow in your preaching journey, here are my top 3 tips on what to do when your sermon fails. Firstly, understand the nature of process - mistakes are okay and are part of growth! Second, ask trustworthy friends to give you positive feedback so you can be encouraged. Finally, read God’s promises over your destiny. Success in the kingdom is measured by believing your promises, not the perfection of your performance. So allow yourself to believe what God has spoken over you as a preacher.

    - Hi, I'm Katia Adams. I'm a preacher and any preacher would be able to tell you that they have preached messages that have absolutely bombed in their preaching career. But what you do after those moments is incredibly important. So here are my top three tips for learning from that moment and not letting it discourage you from your destiny. Firstly, understand the nature of process. When you watch babies learn how to talk and walk, they make many, many mistakes on route to being people who can walk and talk perfectly. We understand the nature process as we watch our children and we've got to understand the nature of process as we learn to operate fully in our gifts. No doubt as you learn to be all that you can be in using your teaching gift, there are gonna be moments where you stumble, moments where you don't pronounce the words correctly, moments where you're learning how to be all that God made you to be. That's just the nature of process. And so we have to understand, after we preach the message that hasn't gone particularly well, we have to see that in the light of us learning to employ the teaching gift to our best ability. And so don't beat yourself up about it. It's just part of the process of learning. Number two, ask trustworthy friends to give you positive feedback, because I'm willing to bet that you've not noticed those amidst your panic. And so ask people who were in the congregation, when you preached your message that you didn't think went particularly well. Ask them to give you some positive feedback so that you can be encouraged and you can also see some of the things that you did well, you will have done some things well. Last one, read the promises of God over your destiny. Success in the Kingdom is measured by believing your promises, not by the perfection of your performance. So go home, read the promises of God that He's spoken over you about your calling, about what He made you for, and then open up your Bible and start a new sermon. Don't let the enemy discourage you from one moment that didn't go particularly well. We all make mistakes. Every preacher, even your favorite ones make mistakes. That's just part of the process of being preachers and learning to teach the Bible well, that doesn't mean you weren't made to do it. So open up your Bible, start a new sermon. Thanks for watching. If you found this helpful, consider joining my E-course, Her Voice. It's a seven week course for women looking to grow their preaching gift.
